World Coconut Day
History of World Coconut Day
The first-ever celebration of World Coconut Day was in the year 2009. It’s an annual event to celebrate this day with great enthusiasm by The Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC).
This day is celebrated as NāraLi pournima in Maharashtra particularly around Mumbai and the Konkan coast, which is observed as a ceremonial day by The Hindu Fishing Communities.
In Bombay this festival formerly involved large numbers of people assembling at the beach between Malabar Hill and Colaba with coconuts and floral offerings being cast into the sea.
It was celebrated towards the end of the monsoon and depicts the beginning of calmer seas and safe sailing.
Health and Nutrition Benefits of Coconut
Coconut is the fruit of the coconut palm. It is mostly used for its water, milk, oil, and meat.
Coconuts are rich in manganese, which is essential for bone health and for the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and cholesterol.
They’re also rich in copper and iron, which helps in the formation of red blood cells, as well as selenium, an important antioxidant that protects our cells.
Studies have found that eating coconut can improve good cholesterol levels and help decrease belly fat. People who frequently eat coconut meat have lower rates of heart disease.
Coconut meat contains phenol compounds, which are antioxidants that help in protecting the cells from oxidative damage.
